What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds? Are they real diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds (also sometimes called lab-created or manmade) are real diamonds. They are created as a result of processes in a lab rather than processes in the earth and are graded the same way as natural diamonds. Only an expert in a lab using specialized equipment can distinguish the difference between lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds. Always ask for the diamond certificate to know the specs on the diamonds you are buying since differences such as lab-grown vs. natural aren’t identifiable by looking at them.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Different From Natural Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds, and are chemically, optically, and physically identical to natural diamonds. Both have equal quality and are graded according to the 4cs (cut, clarity, color, and carat). Only an expert in a lab can distinguish between them. One type of diamond is not better than the other. It all comes down to your personal preference of the history and origin of the diamond. Our natural diamonds (as all diamonds legally sold in the United States) are certified conflict-free according to the 2003 Kimberley Process. How are lab-grown diamonds made?

Lab-grown diamonds are created in a lab using HPHT (high pressure high temperature) or CVD (chemical vapor deposition) processes that are conflict-free. (These are chemical processes that result in real diamonds, just like processes in the earth result in natural diamonds.) 

Any differences between natural diamonds, HPHT, and CVD diamonds are not visible by looking at the diamond and can only be detected by specialized equipment. While HPHT and CVD processes are different, they both can produce beautiful diamonds. We evaluate these diamonds the same way we evaluate natural diamonds – based on their beauty and characteristics, not based on how they are made.
