The January birthstone is garnet, which is a mixture of gems and minerals. (This is a fairly unique structure among gemstones, as most are a single species.) Garnets are often red but can be a variety of colors including green, purple, and orange (depending on the species mix of the garnet).
Garnets have been prized for centuries (and have been found as far back as the Bronze Age!). Ancient Roman warriors wore garnets for protection and safety and Egyptian pharaohs were buried with garnet talismans.
