Tradition has been that ring shopping is done alone. Although many couples still seek that moment of utter surprise, others fear an awkward and surprised look on the face when they realize what they thought was perfect, simply isn’t. More and more, we are seeing couples embark on this experience as a team. One who gives guidance on style or perhaps ensuring they stay within a budget, while the other watches to see what makes their face light up. There is no right or wrong way to go about finding the perfect ring, and there are pros and cons for going it alone- or as a couple. Risk choosing the wrong design by being romantic and creative? Or make it a joint effort and fear a less than perfect surprise proposal? Great news…there is a happy medium. Together you both can choose how involved each of you will be with the decision. Based on the couples that seem to have mastered this, here are 5 of our tips for ring-shopping together as a couple.
1. Game Plan– Before you even step into the store, have a conversation to set some guidelines so neither of you leave disappointed. What is it that you want to accomplish? Is this a mission to get finger sizes and ideas/styles or are you ready to pull the trigger if the perfect ring emerges? It is a big deal to search for an engagement ring and with that may bring an emotional attachment to the one you select. Your goal is to enjoy these moments in your relationship. Buying a ring when you aren’t ready (or worse, leaving without one) may create conflict later.
2. Your Perfect Price– Today, some couples share everything from a home to finances before officially saying “I Do.” However, there may be some details in which you don’t want to discuss. Do you want to discuss price/budget openly or keep it discreet? Are you looking to finance all or part of the ring? Make sure you communicate such topics before you go in to avoid things getting awkward. Any reputable jeweler will respect your wishes and make the experience perfect for you both.
3. Your Perfect Diamond – When searching for your perfect diamond, always remember that you have plenty of options. From standard select diamonds, to environmentally friendly, to beautiful lab-grown creations, the choice is yours. Be sure that your jeweler is picky and hand-selects diamonds for visual beauty. Also confirm that no cracks, fissure or feathers will compromise the integrity of your diamond. In the beginning stage of research, it’s important to know the significance of cut and clarity and color and carat weight. This will help you determine which features are most important to you.
4. A System– Let’s face it, you each have a very unique sense of style and may find yourselves at odds when it comes to the final design. Avoid conflict or hurt feelings by creating a system (we suggest the old fashioned 1-10 scoring) where you can express your likes and dislikes. That way, if your significant other likes something you find hideous, simply stating “1” instead of “that looks like your mother’s ring” will avoid conflict. Keep in mind that your bands don’t need to identically match. You should celebrate your differences in taste and style. Focus on selecting complementing designs you both can live with yet show your unique personality.
5. Keep it fun and romantic!– Having already discussed what you want to accomplish on this outing, remember to take the time and enjoy each other! If it gets a bit tense, take a break. Grab some coffee and when you’re ready, start again. This is a great time to create memories that will last a lifetime. Talk, laugh and yes, hold hands and kiss! This is just another chapter in YOUR love story. When you find “the perfect ring” remember, it doesn’t mean the surprise is ruined. It means the anticipation has transitioned from the ring to the moment of the proposal.
The most important piece to this is to understand and respect each other’s expectations for this special occasion in your relationship. If you are unsure, talk with friends and family and get their take on it. Chances are they have had this conversation and can give you the guidance you want. At the end, you will both be incredibly excited and most importantly, engaged!
