It seems like everything today has a guarantee or warranty. They give us peace of mind and help us feel like we have one less thing to worry about. Unfortunately though, when we need to use these benefits we find out what they truly cover and what they don’t. We really should ask a few questions up front. What does the warranty cover? What does the guarantee cover? What are the conditions that you have to uphold to maintain these benefits? Imagine how you would feel if you bought a car with a lifetime guarantee, only to find out that the only thing the dealership guaranteed is that it was a car! Not so good, right?
So I thought it might be helpful to go over things to look for when looking at the warranties and guarantees that may come with your jewelry purchase, especially a purchase as important as your engagement and wedding ring.
The Experience –
There are some things you expect when you visit a jewelry store. You expect a clean and safe environment, you expect knowledgeable sales people and you expect a selection. But you will find guarantees on the experience as well. Does the store guarantee the largest selection of designers or the highest quality standards in the industry? Maybe they will guarantee the opportunity to build your own ring and have the in-store jewelers set your diamond while you watch. All of these are awesome but don’t just take their word for it, look for their in-store jeweler and look at the rings under a gemscope so you really can see their quality standards.
The Jewelry –
Warranties in this area are probably the most misunderstood but are by far some of the most important. Many jewelers will offer a warranty on the diamonds. The problem here is that they may just be guaranteeing that they are diamonds and nothing else. What happens if a diamond chips, cracks or even falls out of the mounting? Will it be covered? Are there any caveats you need to know about? The greatest feeling is knowing that if something happens you are covered. The worst feeling is finding out it wasn’t covered. The other thing to acknowledge is any requirement to maintain this warranty. Some jewelers will say you need to bring in your ring for inspection and cleaning every 3 months, every 6 months or maybe even once a year. What happens if you miss one of these inspections? Does it void your warranty? Put it on hold until you make it in for another inspection? Don’t be surprised by something as simple as not knowing your required inspections.
Another area to look into is the service plans or maintenance agreements. Does the jeweler offer anything that covers sizing, refinishing or other jewelers work? If they do, what is the cost and what is actually covered? Also important to know is for how long this plan lasts. Asking these questions can save you hundreds of dollars over the life of your jewelry.
The Rest –
So once you find the perfect piece and love the warranties and guarantees that are offered, what’s next? Well this is where you need to make sure the benefits take care of you after you leave the store. Heaven forbid the piece you selected wasn’t perfect or exactly what you wanted, what can you do? Before you leave, make sure you know what your options are for getting a full refund. Many jewelers will only offer an exchange and will not give your money back. What if you want to celebrate a promotion or an anniversary with an upgrade of your diamond? Can you trade it in towards a larger one and if so, how much do you get back? 75%, 100%, maybe 110%?
The last thing to make sure you review is the people and company you are working with. Do you feel comfortable that they will be there to greet you and clean your ring for life with as much enthusiasm as the first time you walked into the store? Will the team be open to helping you when you have to use one of the guarantees or warranties? You can get a lot of information on this by watching how guests are treated as they come in and are not there to buy.
