On your journey towards that perfect engagement ring, you’ll hear a lot of diamond industry jargon: the 4Cs, diamond shapes, details such as pavé bands and milgrain accents. One phrase you might hear is “fancy shape diamonds”. But what are fancy shapes?
Fancy shapes are any diamond shape other than the round brilliant. You can’t go wrong with the traditional round diamond shape – it’s a classic with maximum sparkle! But if you’re looking for something a little different, whether that’s with a modern or vintage flair or traditional with a twist, a fancy shape diamond may be the center stone for you.

Many fancy shapes (such as oval, marquise, and pear) can appear larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight because of their elongated designs. Fancy shapes can also cost less per carat since round diamonds require more of the original diamond material to be cut away during shaping.
Although the round diamond is known for its brilliance and sparkle (due to how it’s cut), some fancy cuts (such as princess and radiant) have similar sparkle, and other fancy cuts (such as emerald) prioritize clarity and have a striking mirror-like effect due to the step-cut style.
