Coromance Idea #55,230 – Plan A Virtual Couples’ Party
Yes, we’re all quarantined at home. No going out on the town. No impromptu meet-ups, happy hours, group dinners. Being unable to hang with friends is a huge bummer.
But your social life doesn’t have to dry up while we’re all inside, just waiting this thing out. Get your friends together for a virtual couples’ party where you can partake in a fun activity together and feel more bonded to your crew. Making memories together, even when you’re technically apart, will make the state of the world feel a little less crazy. Doing something that feels almost normal will be good for your friendships, your relationship and your state of mind. Here’s how to put something fun together.
Choose a Night
It’s safe to say that all of our calendars are pretty open right now. But it’s worth checking with friends in advance to choose the best possible day and time for everyone—especially for those of your friends with kids or who work shifts in an essential industry. Giving people a few days advance heads up also gives everyone something to look forward to. And, seriously, we could all use that right about now.
Pick a Theme
You know your friends best: Are you guys into costume parties? Fancy cocktails? Hitting up trivia night at your local pub? Reading poetry or doing a book club together? Choose a specific theme to your get together to make it feel more put together and special. Having an “event” will set your virtual party apart from any old Zoom or FaceTime call. If you’re feeling really ambitious, send out an evite that fits the theme.
Play a Game
Having a party online is similar to having a party in person in the sense that having some sort of activity is a good way to break the ice and make the gathering feel festive. Video chatting, especially with multiple people, can be awkward. Playing a game makes the conversation a little more organized, especially if you all have to take turns. This can keep people from talking over each other, which sometimes ruins the whole vibe. You can easily play board games like Risk or Monopoly, drinking games, charades, karaoke contest—anything that fits the theme and your crew.
Troubleshoot in Advance
Make sure that you test out your camera, lighting and speakers and have all of your materials ready for whatever you’re planning to do before you get everyone hooked into the call. (And ask everyone to test out their tech ahead of time, too.) That way you’re not trying to set up your headphones or figure out why your camera isn’t working when you should be hanging with your friends.
Have Fun
Putting together a virtual party is much easier than putting together one IRL. Once you have everyone online and hanging out, all you need to do is enjoy. If the game fizzles out for some reason, no big deal. If your Internet connection is slow and your face keeps freezing in hilarious positions, ask your friends to take screenshots so you can take turns making the awkward pics into memes. When it’s over, choose another couple to plan the next get together so you can keep on hanging.
