Customizing Your Perfect Designer Engagement Ring

When you are ready to propose, you are confident about who you want to spend the rest of your life with. Choosing the ring is the part that tends to feel less certain. You want something special and meaningful, a ring that reflects who they are and the bond the two of you share.
We are here to guide you every step of the way. First, find the right engagement ring setting, metal, and accents, and then select a dazzling center stone from our curated collection of loose diamonds.
Building the Ring in Three Steps
01
CHOOSING THE RING SETTING AND ACCENTS
Whatever their style, we can help you create the perfect ring. Dainty and minimal, modern and bold, or vintage and detailed, we will help you find the ideal match from top bridal jewelry designers.
02
CHOOSING THE RING METAL
Choose warm yellow or rose gold, or cool and elegant white gold. We can help you understand the differences between white gold and platinum, and between karat weights.
03
CHOOSING THE CENTER STONE
Select the perfect diamond shape and then pick from our curated selection of loose diamonds. We can walk you through lab-grown vs. natural diamonds and the 4Cs of each diamond as you examine your choices in our diamond viewing room.
Start With Their Style
Maybe you have already talked about rings and they have shown you a Pinterest board of favorites. If you are planning a surprise, think about their personal style instead. Do they lean minimal and modern, or antique and intricate, in their jewelry, their clothing, their home?
Modern Styling
If they prefer clean lines, look toward a modern setting or a solitaire. Each of the settings below carries a modern design style in our catalog.

The Robbins Brothers Difference
For more than 100 years, we have helped couples design rings they wear for a lifetime. Our in-house design studio and master jeweler can modify a designer setting, build something from a sketch, or reimagine an heirloom, and every stone we offer has already cleared our standard that only about 1 in 10 diamonds meets. The finished ring carries our lifetime warranty for cleaning, inspection and repairs at any of our showrooms across California, Arizona, Texas and Washington.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I customize a designer engagement ring setting?
Yes. Many designer settings can be adjusted, whether that means a different metal, a shank width that suits their hand, or a mounting sized for a different center stone. Our jewelry consultants will tell you what a particular designer allows before you commit, and our master jeweler handles the work in house.
How do I choose an engagement ring setting if the proposal is a surprise?
Start with what they already wear. The metal in their everyday jewelry is the most reliable signal, followed by whether their taste runs minimal and modern or antique and detailed. Bring a photo of a piece they wear often and we can work from there.
What is a hidden halo, and will it show?
A hidden halo is a ring of small diamonds set beneath the center stone, facing outward rather than up. From above you see the center stone alone; from the side you catch the extra sparkle. It is a detail that rewards a second look, which is exactly why some guests love it.
What is milgrain detailing on an engagement ring?
Milgrain is the fine beaded edging along the metal of a setting, a hallmark of heirloom-inspired design. It softens the outline of a ring and catches light in a way polished metal does not. Several of our vintage design style settings are finished this way, and you can see the texture clearly in person.
Should I buy a setting and a loose diamond separately?
It is one of two good routes. Choosing the setting and the center stone separately gives you control over the exact shape, size and quality of the diamond, while a complete ring arrives finished as one piece. Our consultants can show you both so the choice feels clear.
Do you offer both lab-grown and natural diamonds for a custom engagement ring?
Yes, we offer both, and we will explain how they compare without judgment. Lab-grown and natural diamonds share the same physical and optical properties, so the decision comes down to what you and your partner value most.
How long does it take to build a custom engagement ring?
It depends on how much is being made from scratch. Pairing an existing setting with a loose diamond is quick, while an original design drawn and built in our studio takes longer. Tell us your proposal date at the first consultation and we will be straight with you about what is achievable.
Do I need an appointment to design an engagement ring?
Walk-ins are always welcome, but we recommend booking a personalized consultation so you have dedicated time with one of our jewelry experts and access to the diamond viewing room. You can book an appointment at robbinsbrothers.com/appointment.
