Holiday Jewelry Gift Guide for Mom

Buying jewelry for your mother is a different problem from buying it for anyone else. She has worn the same few pieces for years, she has opinions she has never bothered to tell you, and she is the least likely person in your life to say anything if the gift turns out to be not quite her. The useful part is that her jewelry box has already answered most of the question.

So we have grouped these gifts by the situation you are in rather than by category. Choosing between a necklace and a bracelet is rarely the hard part. Working out whether she wants something for the daily rotation, something that carries a specific meaning, or something a step past the classics she already owns, is. If you would rather browse by category instead, our holiday jewelry gift guide for her runs a wider selection through pendants, birthstone pieces, gold bracelets and earrings.

Start With the Jewelry She Already Owns

01

SHE HAS A UNIFORM

Two or three pieces do all the work in her week. Match their metal and their scale and a gift joins that rotation instead of living in a drawer beside it.

02

SHE HAS PLENTY, BUT NOTHING PERSONAL

An initial, or a stone tied to her birth month, is the difference between a lovely piece of jewelry and one that could only ever have been meant for her.

03

SHE HAS THE BASICS COVERED

If she owns diamond studs and a gold chain already, another pair and another chain are duplicates. Go up in scale, or into something she would not buy herself.

If She Wears the Same Thing Every Day

Everything here is 14k yellow gold, because a mother who has worn one metal for decades is not usually looking to switch. None of it is large, and that is deliberate: a piece that competes with what she already has on tends to stay in the box. Our full range of necklaces and pendants and our earrings have more in this register if none of these is her.

14k yellow gold solitaire diamond stud earrings in a three-prong setting

14k Yellow Gold Solitaire Natural Diamond Stud Earrings 1/2 ct. tw.

  • One round natural diamond per ear, 1/2 ct. tw. across the pair
  • Three slim prongs hold each stone, so very little metal shows around it
  • Warm 14k yellow gold with friction backs
14k yellow gold open heart diamond pendant necklace on a box chain

14k Yellow Gold Heart Natural Diamond Pendant 1/4 ct. tw.

  • An open heart outline, set with natural diamonds the whole way around
  • 1/4 ct. tw. in 14k yellow gold
  • An 18 inch box chain with a 2 inch extender
14k yellow gold diamond infinity bolo bracelet on a fine wheat chain

14k Yellow Gold Natural Diamond Bracelet .05 ct. tw.

  • An infinity figure at the center, one loop polished gold and the other set with diamonds
  • .05 ct. tw. of natural diamonds on a fine 14k yellow gold wheat chain
  • A bolo slider rather than a clasp, so it pulls closed to any wrist

If You Want It to Mean Something Specific

Meaning tends to come from one of two places, her name or her calendar. An initial is the direct version and reads from across a room. A birthstone is the quieter one: it carries a date without spelling it out, which is why it survives being worn every day. The two below cover February and May, and our birthstone jewelry covers the rest of the year.

14k yellow gold diamond initial pendant necklace on a box chain

14k Yellow Gold Natural Diamond Initial Pendant 1/8 ct. tw.

  • Her initial in 14k yellow gold, each stroke set with a single row of diamonds
  • 1/8 ct. tw. of natural diamonds, the lightest touch in this guide
  • On the same 18 inch box chain as the heart above
14k white gold amethyst and diamond halo necklace, the February birthstone

14k White Gold Genuine Amethyst and Natural Diamond Necklace .05 ct. tw.

  • A round genuine amethyst, the February birthstone, inside a diamond halo
  • Set in 14k white gold, with .05 ct. tw. of natural diamond accents
  • A 16 inch rollo chain, so it sits right at the collarbone
14k white gold emerald and diamond halo stud earrings, the May birthstone

14k White Gold Genuine Emerald and Natural Diamond Earrings .05 ct. tw.

  • Round genuine emeralds, the May birthstone, each ringed by small diamonds
  • Petite 14k white gold studs, .05 ct. tw. of natural diamonds across the pair
  • Friction backs, so they stay put through a long day

If She Already Has the Classics

Someone who has been given jewelry for years usually owns the starting set already. What she is unlikely to have bought for herself is the bigger version of it. All three of these are Eternalle lab-grown diamonds in 14k white gold, and they carry the heaviest stones in this guide: a full carat on the pendant and two on the bracelet. There is more at that weight in our tennis bracelets.

Eternalle lab-grown diamond inside-out hoop earrings in 14k white gold

Eternalle 14k White Gold Lab-Grown Diamond Hoop Earrings 1/2 ct. tw.

  • Diamonds set around the inside face of the hoop as well as the outside
  • 1/2 ct. tw. of Eternalle lab-grown diamonds
  • Rhodium-plated 14k white gold with a hinged snap closure
Eternalle lab-grown diamond tennis bracelet in 14k white gold

Eternalle 14k White Gold Lab-Grown Diamond Tennis Bracelet 2 ct. tw.

  • A single line of round diamonds the whole way around, 2 ct. tw.
  • Four prongs per stone in rhodium-plated 14k white gold
  • A 7 inch length with a push-lock clasp
Eternalle lab-grown pear diamond double halo pendant in 14k white gold

Eternalle 14k White Gold Lab-Grown Diamond Pendant 1 ct. tw.

  • A pear-shaped center stone framed by two rows of diamonds in a pointed teardrop
  • 1 ct. tw. of Eternalle lab-grown diamonds, vintage in style
  • An 18 inch chain, hung from a diamond-set bail

The Robbins Brothers Difference

We have been helping people choose fine jewelry since 1921, and a gift piece is held to the same standard we built our name on with engagement rings. Only about one diamond in ten meets it. Our master jeweler works in house, which is the part that matters when you are buying for somebody else: chains get shortened, bracelets get sized and pendants get engraved on site, rather than shipped away for weeks.

Every piece carries our best-in-class lifetime warranty, with complimentary cleaning and inspection at any of our showrooms. And if you are unsure about a chain length, or about how wide a link she would actually wear, bring us the question before you decide rather than after. Our jewelry consultants would far rather spend that time with you now than have the piece come back in January.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a jewelry gift for a mom who already has everything?

Start from what is missing rather than from what is nice. Mothers who get given jewelry regularly tend to accumulate a deep bench of small everyday pieces and very little sitting above it, so the two gifts that still land are scale and specificity. A tennis bracelet is the first kind. Her initial, or the stone for her birth month, is the second. Our jewelry consultants do this every December and are glad to think it through with you.

Should I buy my mom yellow gold or white gold jewelry?

Look at what is on her hands and her wrists now. Most people wear one metal almost exclusively, and a gift in the other one often goes unworn even when she genuinely likes it. If she does mix the two, let the stone decide instead: a colored gemstone tends to sit better against white gold, and a plain polished piece is warmer in yellow.

What if a bracelet does not fit her?

The two bracelets in this guide handle that differently. The infinity bracelet uses a bolo slider instead of a clasp, so it pulls closed to whatever wrist it is on and needs no sizing at all. The tennis bracelet is a fixed 7 inch length, and our master jeweler can shorten or extend it if that is not right. Either way it is a change we make in house rather than send out, so it comes back quickly.

Is a birthstone gift a good idea if I do not know her favorite color?

A birthstone carries a date rather than a preference, which is why it still works when the color is not one she would have chosen off a shelf. We are not precious about it, though. If her birth month’s stone is not something she would wear, we can build a piece around a gemstone she loves instead and the meaning holds just the same.

Can I have a pendant engraved for my mom?

Yes. Our in-house design studio and master jeweler handle engraving on site, so a date or a set of initials on the back of a pendant does not mean sending the piece away. Engraving and custom work both need lead time in December, so start the conversation early if you want it wrapped.

Do you offer both lab-grown and natural diamonds for gifts like these?

Yes, and this guide mixes them on purpose. The stud earrings and the heart pendant are natural diamonds. The hoops, the tennis bracelet and the pear pendant are Eternalle lab-grown. Seeing them next to each other is the easiest way to understand that the difference is in where the diamond came from and the weight you can reach, not in how it looks on. Our consultants will explain the trade-offs without pushing you toward either.

What warranty comes with a jewelry gift for mom?

Every piece is backed by our best-in-class lifetime warranty, covering cleaning, inspection and repairs. The detail that matters on a gift is that the cover belongs to the piece rather than to whoever paid for it, so once it is hers she can bring it into any of our showrooms herself.

Do I need an appointment to shop for a gift for my mom?

Walk-ins are always welcome, though December is our busiest stretch and a booked consultation means dedicated time with one of our experts. It is also the easiest way to see a few pieces side by side under the same lighting, which is hard to do any other way. You can reserve a time on our appointment page.
