All About September Birthstone Jewelry: Sapphire

Although diamonds will never give up the top spot, colored gemstones are gaining popularity with good reason. Sapphires, our September birthstone, are particularly prized. They score a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale (only diamonds have a higher score), they have a subtle sparkle that reflects light beautifully, and have rich color (most often blue, but they can be found in other colors as well).

Everyone loves sapphires, even royalty! The most well-known sapphire might be Princess Diana’s engagement ring, which is now Kate Middleton’s. But sapphires work equally well in both casual and luxe settings. Sapphire earrings or a sapphire bracelet can add understated color and sparkle whether you’re dressed in a white t-shirt and jeans or a little black dress.

Sapphire as the September Birthstone

Persians used sapphires as protective talismans in the middle ages and were associated with royalty long before Princess Diana’s amazing ring. Sapphires are symbols of wisdom, loyalty, and trust and become loved family heirlooms.

Styling Sapphire Fine Jewelry

For a cool, sophisticated look, try sapphires in white gold or platinum. For a warm feel, pair sapphires with yellow or rose gold.

Consider a sapphire and diamond ring stack (either as wedding bands or a fun every day stack!).

Sapphires are wonderful pair to neutrals such as white, black, and grey as they add a color contrast without overwhelming the outfit. They also are the perfect addition to diamonds and gold. Stack a sapphire bracelet with a diamond tennis bracelet or layer a sapphire pendant with diamond pendant or yellow gold chain. The deep blue of sapphires truly complements and elevates anything you pair them with!

And sapphires in engagement rings and wedding bands are stunning. Learn more about incorporating sapphires into your bridal jewelry here.
