With Earth Day coming up, now is a great time to think about how we can all show a little more love for the planet, and reduce our carbon footprints. While there are a number of ways to do this in your daily life—using less water and committing to recycling—you can also use your wedding day as an opportunity to really “go green.”
Whether you consider yourself eco-conscious or just eco-curious (or neither!), you can honor Mother Earth without having to sacrifice style. Here are six easy ways to do it.
Choose eco-friendly diamonds
Even before your wedding, you can play a part in making the Earth a better place. Consider a lab-grown diamond. It exhibits the same exceptional color, clarity, beauty and brilliance as a mined diamond, because it’s identical in composition. But if you’re sensitive to how products you own are produced, you’ll be able to feel a sense of pride about your eco-friendly bauble knowing it has had less impact on the Earth. Plus it’s surprisingly affordable for its quality and size.
Go paperless
Cheaper for you and better for the planet, choosing virtual save-the-dates and invitations significantly reduces paper waste. Use Paperless Post for pretty e-vites or a service like RSVPify to collect your yeses and nos in a super easy way, for both you and your guests. Sounds like a win-win for everyone!
Serve local produce
Ask your caterer to source fruits and vegetables for your meal from local farmers and farmers’ markets. Not only will you be supporting the growers near your big event but you’ll also play a part in reducing the energy it takes to get produce flown in from around the world. Plus, locally grown food is fresher and usually tastes better, making your meal more delectable, too.
Use in-season flowers
This is another way to both save money and go green: By asking your florist to choose flowers that are in-season, you’ll pay less (since the florals won’t need to be specially sourced and shipped), and you’ll save resources that would have been used to get those hard-to-find flowers to you. If you have your heart set on certain blooms, pick one or two must-haves and go in-season for the rest.
Swap china for compostables
For cocktail hour and dessert, opt for compostable plates, napkins and utensils rather than renting china. You’ll save water since disposables can be tossed away (and won’t create extra waste if they’re compostable).
Give a donation instead of favors
Let’s be honest, most wedding guests forget or end up tossing the favors they get after they return home. So, instead of giving everyone a trinket festooned with ribbon and other accouterments, choose to give a donation to a cause that really matters to you. If you really want to gift your guests something, however, try something edible so there’s less waste.
