Please share your community involvement: For 20+ years, I have actively been involved in organizations that work to ensure the basic human rights of all LGBTQ individuals where they can be open, honest and safe at home and in the community. Additionally, I partner with organizations that work to secure the political, educational, social and economic rights through the health and well-being of all persons.

My other passion in life is children. From a very young age, I have worked with kids in a teaching capacity whether it was helping kindergartners to learn their ABC’s or 4th graders who struggled with reading. For a number of years, I served on the Board of Directors for March of Dimes. I continue to volunteer with kids because I truly believe our kids are the future.

What motivates you to do your very best?  Two key things – success and my family. Knowing that my hard work and perseverance will help me achieve greater professional success is what keeps me going. I have always loved a challenge and to this day, I cannot resist taking on a challenge, stretching outside my comfort zone, and testing my limits. The glory of success when all goes well is one of the best feelings in the world.  Couple this with the example I am setting for my four daughters just makes it all the more worthwhile.

What women in your life inspire you? My mom was the greatest woman I have ever known. When she was 12, she told her parents that she wanted to become a minister. As was often said during the 40’s and 50’s, they told her she couldn’t do that, that only men can become ministers. My mom took them at their word, went to college, dropped out after two years to get married, and had five children by the age of 30. While my father traveled most weeks, she raised us to become loving, successful, professional individuals. When my father decided to divorce my mom in the early 80’s, my mom decided now was her time. She went to seminary, became a minister, and ran a number of churches with a special focus on community outreach and serving the poor. After a successful career of 25 years, she retired to take care of her husband who suffered from Alzheimer’s. Everything she did was from a point of love and caring, while being highly successful in her own right.

How do you define your purpose in life? My purpose in life is simply to be honest and true to myself, setting the best example I can for my family, ensuring they know every single day that they are loved and that I will always be there for them.

What has been your biggest obstacle to overcome, and how did you grow from it? As a child, I was what you would call risk adverse. I didn’t like change. I felt the best when my life was stable and predictable. And then I chose a career in retail in the 1980’s. The decade of change, consolidation, mergers, and acquisitions. Change in my career became the mantra, the given and things were suddenly out of my control. At first, I really struggled with it. With each change, I felt my anxiety rise and my desire for control and stability grow. But with each change came new learnings and challenges and ultimately, the adventure. I started to look at change as an opportunity to do new things, live someplace that I never would have considered before, and made some of the best friends of my life. I got to do things that I had never considered before, like be on the Today Show with Katie Couric and a Make A Wish child. Or launch a new product line with Sophia Vergara and partner with David Bromstad from HGTV.

How do you define your purpose in life? Ever since I was a young girl, my role has always been the “peace-maker” in the family. I believe this is still my ultimate purpose. We have 2 ears and 1 mouth–on purpose. We should listen twice as much as we speak. Listen to seek understanding before we speak. It sounds idyllic on a grand scale. Just take it one situation — one person at a time.

What has been your biggest obstacle to overcome, and how did you grow from it? The biggest obstacle to overcome has been rebuilding my self-esteem after my divorce. It was a tough time and I’m still growing.

Tell us a little about yourself: From a young age I knew that I could overcome any obstacle in front of me through hard work and perseverance. Having gone to over a dozen schools growing up, I learned very quickly that I will never meet a stranger. I have always operated on a direct approach and having a filter wasn’t always easy for me.  But over the years, I have molded this into transparency and direct yet compassionate communication.

Don’t let your engagement ring go stag to your wedding! Just like you found your soulmate, you need to find your engagement ring’s perfect match, too! You might be wondering – is it even necessary to get wedding rings? The answer is no, some people choose to wear their engagement ring alone, while others opt for multiple wedding rings and more bling to symbolize their union. The choice is yours, but when it comes to how to choose the perfect wedding ring, we’ve got you covered. Here are some tips and bits of advice to consider when shopping for your treasured wedding band.

To Match or Not to Match? Many engagement rings are created with a matching wedding band. The classic choice is to get the match that fits with the curves and style of your engagement ring perfectly. However, nowadays, the mix-and-match look of stackable bands is a very popular option. This allows you the freedom to get something unique, personalized and add some flair to your bridal set. If you aren’t sure what look you are going for, the best way to decide is to try different styles, and figure out what is right for you! If you like an eclectic look, you may opt for a unique band in a contrasting metal color or design, or a couple of stacking bands to mix and match.

Alternatively, if you love a consistent, classic look, the matching band is probably right for you. Not sure if your engagement ring has a perfect match? Just come into a store and ask an expert. If you do choose to embellish your wedding band design, make sure you leave yourself enough time to special order your rings.

Think About Budget. So we all know that the expense of weddings can certainly add up. But creating a budget will help you ensure you get a ring you both love while respecting the pocketbook. Be sure to set aside enough funds for both wedding bands early on in the budgeting process. As Hayley Parke, a Robbins Brothers customer advises:

“I would encourage grooms to keep an open mind when it comes to the price tag. A lot of men I know bought a simple $50 band online, without putting much thought into it. Sure, it will be durable and affordable, but just make sure that’s the symbol of your love that you want to wear for the rest of your life.”

When my fiancé and I went shopping for our bands, he went in with the mindset that he wants something simple and inexpensive. The first time we went shopping, he found just that. After thinking on it for a couple weeks though, he decided that it didn’t feel special enough, and after we went shopping again with a looser budget, he ended up choosing something different. Even though it went a little above our ideal budget, we both wanted him to be happy with his choice, and a little extra dough was worth it. :)”

Metal Types. You may want to research metal types and designs before making the final decision. Gone are the days where all you had to choose from was gold and platinum. Rings are now made out of a wide variety of metals and materials – some men’s rings even have carbon fiber or meteorite inlays. Although these are cool and unique options, you will find that some particular metals and designs can be difficult or even impossible to resize.

Sizing. This is especially important for men’s rings. Most men have not worn a ring before their wedding band, so they probably have no idea what size they wear. If you aren’t used to wearing a ring, remember that it might feel a little tight at first, but you will get used to it. Be sure you’re ordering the correct size for you! Keep in mind, eternity rings (where the design or diamonds go all the way around the ring) as well as some of the popular alternative metals like tungsten and titanium, cannot be sized. If you choose an eternity band or one of the alternative metals that are not meant to size, make sure to ask about specific ring policies that may allow for an exchange if necessary in the future.  If sizing is a concern to you, you may want to stick with a more traditional metal, or add a sizing bar. If you aren’t sure, or need more advice, ask an expert or a master jeweler at one of our stores for more information.

“When it came to shopping for my own rings, I liked the look of an eternity band, but not the sizing inflexibility. I opted for a sizing bar, which leaves a small section of plain metal at the bottom of a ring so that it can be sized in the future, if necessary,” Parke shared.

Shop Early. When shopping for your wedding ring(s), timing is key. When it comes time to purchase your wedding bands, there are many reasons why you might need to special order. The most common being ordering the ring in your size, or switching the metal type. Otherwise, maybe the rings in stock don’t strike your fancy… or you just want something totally one-of-a-kind. If you need to special order your ring, make sure you have enough time. Every designer and collection has a different lead time for special orders, so to ensure that you get your ring in time for the big day, check the chart here. A good rule of thumb is to start shopping for your wedding rings at least 4 months before your wedding. Then be sure to order at least 2–3 months before the wedding. This will give you enough time to think about what you want, look for some inspiration, add something personal, and pick up the rings before the big day!

Covid-Friendly Couples’ Guide to Summer Romance

All right, so summer 2020 is definitely not going as planned. Many people have had to postpone their engagement, wedding, cancel honeymoons and just generally avoid all kinds of typically summer romance-related fun.

But! Even though we’re all dealing with the pandemic right now we can still keep our relationships fresh and exciting. These summer-centric ideas will help you stay safe while also bringing some romance into your union.

Take a Road Trip
Get some much-needed time away from home by choosing a vacation spot you can drive to, like a campground or home rental. You can stay safe in the comfort of your car on the way there—bring lots of snacks and PPE for gas and bathroom stops!—and get a much needed change of scenery when you arrive at your destination.

Get Artsy Together
Get out in nature and try your hand at some still life artwork. Find a secluded spot overlooking a beach or on a hike and sketch your surroundings. (You could even choose a place right in your own backyard that inspires you!) Even if you’re not all that artistic, you’ll have fun trying to capture your subject and checking out each other’s work. For an added challenge, try drawing each other.

Go to the Movies
Check out drive-in movie options in your area—some venues (like the Rose Bowl in Southern California) are also offering the chance to see films on the big screen without the risk of being in a crowded movie theater. You could even opt to turn your backyard into a cinematic experience by throwing up a white sheet and projecting a movie on an exterior wall. Don’t forget to pop some popcorn!

Connect on a Deeper Level
Use the time you have together at home to really get to know each other. Ask each other thought-provoking questions about topics you may not otherwise talk about, including your own relationship. Plan a Dream Vacation
You may not feel ready to travel quite yet or your destination of choice may not be available right now. But now’s a great time to find some romantic escapism by planning out where you’d want to go when the world opens back up. Scour travel blogs together, make a Pinterest board of ideal destinations and check Airbnb for fun places you could stay. All of this advance planning is also helpful so you can budget for your dream vacation now, and then be completely ready to just enjoy it when the time comes.

Double-Date (Responsibly)
If you’re feeling comfortable seeing other people, invite another couple to have socially-distant dinner and drinks with you. Order food and bring your own beverages while you sit at a safe distance in your yard or at a local park. This way, you can catch up in real life and feel like you’re doing something new. (Seeing other people?! OMG!) Having an in-person conversation with other adults will be rejuvenating for your own relationship just because being social is still somewhat of a novelty these days. Crazy times, indeed.

Wedding Planning During Quarantine

With everything going on in the world, it may feel like your wedding plans are indefinitely on hold. And, maybe you’re one of the many couples whose celebrations really are on hold if you were planning to tie the knot this summer and needed to postpone. (Our thoughts are with you—that’s really hard.)

But while you’re spending most of your time at home, you can keep the planning going and lift your spirits with some fun and practical tasks. The following ideas will help you fulfill those wedding dreams and, hopefully, make the wait to wed a little bit easier.

Try on Dresses
Okay, okay. So you can’t exactly go into a bridal store and try on dresses for real. But you can get closer to the dress right from your home. First, try on the dresses you have in your closet to determine the best fit and style for your shape. Which dresses do you feel amazing in? Which ones less so? Identify what it is about those rock star pieces that you love. Next, try on any white tops you have—does your coloring look better in a stark white, ivory or even cream? (Maybe you want to go with a color and not do white at all?)

Once you have a good handle on what you look and feel your best in, consider checking out a virtual dress builder, like this one from Amsale, that lets you create (and purchase!) your perfect wedding gown. Even if you don’t choose a dress while in quarantine, you’ll have a much better idea of what you want when you do eventually go into the store.

Shop for Rings
Now is a great time to think about what kinds of wedding bands you want to rock. You can easily browse options online or with a virtual ring concierge, just to see how various styles will coordinate with your engagement ring. When you have a clear idea of the kind of ring you want, this will make your future trip into a store more fun. (It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with so many choices right in front of you!) You can also consider what metal you’d prefer, given your lifestyle, and if you want to have any engraving done before the big day.

Pay Attention to Greenery
If you’re spending more time than usual walking your dog or strolling your neighborhood to get some air, really notice the flowers and plants you see. Scouring Pinterest for floral ideas is great but seeing the textures and colors in person is more helpful. Take notice of hues you love, types of flowers you prefer (structured succulents versus lighter grasses and ferns) and take photos so you can remember what you like.

Make Your DIY Dreams Come True
Maybe you dreamed of making your wedding favors. Or sewing your own rehearsal dinner dress. Or painting self-portraits of you and your beloved. Whatever you envisioned, now’s a great time to take on a creative project. If you’re working from home and find that you have more free time than usual, you can put it into action to create something meaningful for your big day. Plus, having a project to work on can be a form of self-care if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Do Photo Projects
Many couples incorporate pictures into their big day décor: Some display wedding photos from previous generations, make a photo book that doubles as a guest book, or create a slideshow that tells the story of their relationship. If you have extra time on your hands, now is a great time to go through your photos, ask relatives to find ones you might need, and get prints made through one of the many options available online. Going down memory lane right now can also be a welcome respite from the day-to-day monotony of quarantine.

Narrow Your Guest List
This strange time is a great opportunity to do some soul searching about the type of celebration you ideally want to have and who you want to be there. Maybe you’ve been inspired to rekindle relationships with certain friends or family members while in quarantine. Maybe you’ve realized that some of your relationships aren’t exactly ones that you want to continue. Perhaps you’re feeling like you want to have a smaller celebration, given the time frame of your big day and the current state of the world. While you don’t want to make any rash decisions during a stressful time, which this certainly can be for many people, you can do some thinking with your partner about which people really need to witness your nuptials.

Mother’s Day Plans in the Time of Corona

This Mother’s Day we all face the same challenge. How do we celebrate the extraordinary women in our lives who deserve the world, even amidst the Coronavirus pandemic? If you are used to treating mom to dinner at her favorite restaurant, taking her shopping, or even traveling to see her, it’s likely that your plans have been altered in some fashion. But don’t fret, the celebration must go on!

We’ve reached out to a few Robbins Brothers team members and favorite lifestyle experts to see just what they have in mind for this Mother’s Day. Hopefully these plans will inspire and remind you that together or apart, Mother’s Day 2020 in the time of Corona can be just as special and memorable as past years. In fact, it will be one for the books.

Mother’s Day 2020 will certainly look different, but there are traditions I plan on keeping. Like church (online of course), brunch and mimosas (at home this year) with my wonderful husband Daniel of 25 years, my beautiful daughter Isabelle, who this year can have mimosas, she is 21! As well as my youngest baby, my puppy Molly. We also plan on some new adventures. I would like to go on a family bike ride in the early afternoon and end the day with a car picnic watching the sunset. This will be the first Mother’s Day in 2 years that my girl will be home. She has spent the last 2 years traveling with Athletes in Action on mission trips. I’m selfishly excited she is home but so grateful she has been able to experience such incredible places. I am so proud of the woman she has become. Can’t believe she will be a senior in college this fall! She makes being a mama easy. I am beyond blessed to have my family close and healthy; it is the best gift I could ask for.

Since this Mother’s Day will have to be celebrated indoors, my sister and I plan on preparing a gourmet breakfast (we’ll see how that goes…ha!) for our mom. We will also continue our yearly Mother’s Day tradition of baking banana bread together. We’ve baked banana bread with our mom since we were little so it’s something that we all look forward to and enjoy together.

I’ve been blessed to call myself “Mommy” for seven years now, so naturally Mother’s Day is my favorite Holiday!! It reminds me to be grateful for all the incredible years I had with my mother and how special it is to soak up time with my little one! Every year I get to pick my favorite restaurant spot and my little family gets all dressed up and heads to brunch. If I could plan the perfect day (this year), I would still want my family to get all dressed up (because we all know it’s been a while lol), and have my husband cook me a delicious filet! This year I may even wish for my favorite flowers, tulips, to add a little more brightness to this new normal. Even though we’ll be all dolled up inside, I’m so blessed to still be able to spend time with my family. I’m a lucky Mama!

I lost my amazing Mom (Vernita) when I was just 12 years old, and my grandmother (Dear), who raised me, the year after I graduated from college. However, Thelma McLeod who I met at church when I was a toddler has been a rock in my life. I fondly anticipate celebrating her every Mother’s Day. One of her favorite stores is Macy’s and annually I’ve given her a gift card to buy whatever she wants (it’s usually a new pair of shoes!). Though the amount may be a little less this year, the sentiment remains the same. Thelma is a blessing to me, I appreciate her immensely and I’m so excited to treat her to a little online retail therapy at her favorite store.

For Mother’s Day I plan to Zoom or FaceTime with my beautiful mother Shirley in Tennessee. I’m sure there will be love, laughter and cheers-ing involved. In the past we have spent Mother’s Day outdoors, in nature, barbecuing, enjoying the sun and each other’s company. This year while practicing “safe at home,” I’m hoping for breakfast in bed (which I’m assuming will consist of a pop-tart and spilled milk), some time outside in the yard, hanging out by the pool, maybe a game of Marco Polo and a delicious dinner. I’m sure we will Door Dash so I don’t have to cook or clean (benefits of quarantine). I would love to get a manicure and pedicure but I’m not sure how well a 7-year-old will do with a bottle of nail polish 😂. Either way, this Mother’s Day we will be safe at home and filled with love, laughter and great memories.

Since my niece was born almost 7 years ago, we’ve done a combined birthday party and Mother’s Day celebration most years on Mother’s Day. It’s the perfect opportunity for our whole family to come together and celebrate. I’m looking forward to this year especially because we’ve all taken quarantine very seriously. By Mother’s Day, we’ll be able to come together for a small celebration and pool party at my parent’s house to celebrate both my mom and my niece.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and no doubt this year will be very different. We will all need to be a little extra thoughtful for the moms in our lives. Leo’s mom lives in Brazil so we are constantly thinking of ways to make her feel loved and appreciated. Callie’s mom lives very close to us and we haven’t been able to visit in over 60 days. It hurts our hearts so much to not be able to wrap our arms around them in these uncertain times, and because of this quarantine we will never take that for granted again. This year we plan on making them feel a big ol’ virtual hug by starting the day off with a care package drop off. Some coffee, sweets, flowers and probably a very valuable toilet paper roll! Then later that day we will have a Zoom party with our brothers where we will play some fun games and just laugh the night away.

I think I’m going to invite her over for a little brunch and mimosas. With the nice weather we’ve had lately, I’ll probably set up my backyard to entertain, have some music on and enjoy a day in the sun. Just me and mom!
