The Vintage Baguette Cut Diamond: A Buying Guide

If you are looking to add a dash of art deco or vintage style to your bridal set, including a baguette cut diamond into your setting may be the perfect option.

Baguette cut diamonds are typically on the smaller side, and frequently used as side stones or accent diamonds on engagement rings and wedding bands. This little beauty can come in two shapes; the baguette can be rectangular with straight edges that run parallel to each other, or tapered, where the long sides angle into each other (think of a long thin triangle without the point).

If you are looking for something that makes a statement, set baguettes to fan out around the center stone into a ballerina setting. This type of setting gets its name due to the stones that resemble a ballerina’s tutu.

If diamond bands are your thing, swapping out the traditional round brilliant with a baguette cut diamond is a good way to add some unique and personal style. When purchasing a wedding band with this setting, be sure to avoid baguette cut diamonds that have uneven corners and sides that aren’t parallel.

What else should you consider when buying a baguette? Similar in nature to an emerald cut diamond, when buying a diamond shape that features a larger table (the top of the diamond), and long facet cuts, you should look for diamonds that have few inclusions (those natural birthmarks that make every diamond unique). These characteristics can cause inclusions to be more visible.

Finally, all baguettes in your special setting should be similar in diamond color, diamond clarity and if being paired together as side stones, make sure the diamond sizes are comparable.

Diamond size is more important than carat weight due to the length and width of the stones. Keeping these factors in mind will help your setting look symmetrical.

Go ahead and have some fun with a baguette cut diamond. They can give your engagement ring and wedding bands a vintage look that is timeless yet modern.
