These days, a marriage proposal doesn’t really happen until it’s posted on social media. (Okay, okay, that’s a little extreme but you know what I mean.) Getting to ‘gram your big moment is one of the highlights of popping the question, or being asked—it’s a fun way to share the news with your circle of friends and family members in a very visual way.
For a proposal that will capture hearts—and not just the clickable kind—follow these tips to get the moment ready for Instagram.
Get the shot
First and foremost, you have to capture the moment (or the moments right after) with a camera. You can set something up on a tripod with a timer, have a friend or family member hide and shoot or hire a pro. If that sounds too complicated, use a selfie stick after you pop the question to take some snaps.
Plan your wardrobe
It’s challenging to encourage your other half to wear a specific outfit without making your request seem odd, but if you can, try to suggest that they wear a dress or a sweater you “love” and then coordinate your clothing to complement theirs. This way, your wardrobe is part of the same color palette and vibe (as in, you’re both dressed up or you’re both casual), which will make your photos look even better.
Pick a spot with ambiance
The setting of your proposal is important for making the moment photo-worthy. The beach, a lush park or a hiking trail are all great outdoor options, while a cute cafe or bespoke boutique hotel would be perfect if you’d rather propose indoors. Just be sure to choose a spot where you can have a bit of privacy and where random objects won’t ruin your shot (like trash cans, looky-loos and parked cars). Even your just-cleaned and spruced up apartment living room would work if you cleared off your end tables, put your shoes away and position a cozy blanket on your couch.
Make sure there’s good lighting
Yes, Instagram is known for its filters but you’ll want to make sure that the spot in which you’re popping the question has flattering lighting. This means no direct sunlight on anyone’s face, enough light so that you can see each other and, of course, no fluorescent lights. Pink light bulbs and candles will help make your photos look incredible, #nofilter needed.
Incorporate grammable details
Create a stylish setting and your proposal will not only be memorable, but look completely put together. A cute box for the ring, a fun blanket to sit on, a book of love poems with a meaningful inscription, farmers’ market flowers—pretty objects and tokens like these will make the moment even more special and photo-friendly.
