Once you have that shiny ring around your finger, you’ll never want to take it off. You’ll catch yourself admiring it everywhere – on the couch, while working, when you purposely use your left hand to wave to your neighbors on the street – it is the single most prized possession you will ever own, and yes it will be your treasure. The last thing you’ll want is to cause any damage to it.
If you’re planning to wear your ring forever (which I’m sure you are) and be able to pass down to your great-grandchildren, it is important to learn the best ways to take care of it. Here are the top 5 times you should remove your wedding ring to keep it in tip-top shape.
When you’re applying hand sanitizer
With the current COVID-19 situation our world is facing, I’m sure you’ve increased your hand washing and sanitizing exponentially, and rightfully so (keep it up, friends). But before you apply another layer, please know that using hand sanitizer on an extreme basis, can pose a negative effect to your rings over time. Similar to using household products such as bleach or upholstery cleaners; the chemicals in these products can react negatively to the metal or stone leaving it dull or discolored. Obviously hygiene is super important, so before using hand sanitizer, take your ring off, apply, then put it back on once it dries.
When you’re going swimming
In my previous role as Customer Experience Manager, one of the most common occurrences I came across were couples losing their rings while on their honeymoon. When submerged in cold water, your body will attempt to keep your core warm by constricting the blood vessels, which in turn slows down the blood flow to your skin. So if you take a dip in a swimming pool or the ocean, your fingers can shrink and your ring can potentially slip off.
While you’re cooking
If you’re working with food, it is recommended you remove all jewelry, not just your ring. Think about the disgusting particles you may get on the inside of your ring while marinating pork, assembling burger patties or preparing meatballs. All of that can get stuck inside the prongs and cause a rash to form. If this happens, remove your ring until you can get professionally cleaned.
When you’re working out or playing sports
This basically only applies to weight training exercises or any other physical activity that requires you to use your hands. The last thing you want is to be curling 10s and you chip a stone or lose a diamond. Do yourself a favor and store your rings in a safe place when partaking in tennis or bodybuilding. If you’re doing cardio, like running or cycling, you’re safe.
When you’re going to bed
This is for your own safety, especially if you’re a wild sleeper like me. Take off your rings before bed to avoid getting scratched or the prongs getting caught in your hair. On a more serious note, the weight you apply to your hand can cause the ring to change its shape over time which can lead to diamonds falling out, or the metal snapping.
Be sure to learn how to clean our diamond ring before your next night out.
