As with many things in life, men and women often see things differently. And a recent study about engagements revealed a big gender gap when it comes to how both sexes view diamond rings and their significance.
Researchers found that women would rather a guy propose when he’s ready to, no matter what that means for the size of her rock, while guys would rather wait and save money so they could buy a more bling-tastic ring. Pretty interesting, right?
For me, an engagement ring is more about what it represents—commitment, love, and many other wonderful things—than what it looks like. Don’t get me wrong: I was very particular about the kind of ring I wanted (I’m wearing it everyday for the rest of my life!) but when it came to size, I wasn’t too concerned how big or small the actual diamond was.
However, I do think there is a lot of pressure on guys to deliver that big, sparkling diamond ring that they imagine every woman dreams about. So, putting myself in a man’s shoes, I can understand why a guy would want to be able to present his girlfriend with something spectacular. But, what many guys don’t realize is that most of us just want them to get down on one knee—STAT!—and present us with whatever ring they can afford. (Hey, there’s always the chance to upgrade later, right?)
So, I gotta ask the ladies out there: Would you rather your guy propose when he’s ready to marry you, or wait until he can buy you the ring he thinks you deserve?
