I know what you’re saying to yourself right now. Please, oh please, not another “Top 10 List.” Lists for craziest socks, favorite brands of hot chocolate, and all-time worst holiday cards are as common as Christmas trees tied to the top of SUVs in December. My guess is that lists are the result of year-end reflections of what’s good and not-so-good in the world.
There’s something special about watching a classic love story when there’s a chill in the air and you’re almost done with the gift shopping. It’s time to pop the corn, cuddle with your significant other (in my case, my two dogs) and ignore the emails and texts for a couple of hours. Drumroll please. Here are the top 10 romantic holiday movies (according to your faithful Robbins Brothers bloggers) of all time:
1) The Holiday – Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet star as two young women who are suddenly alone for Christmas. Only when they fly across The Pond and switch homes for the holidays do they find true love with the charming Jude Law and Jack Black.
2) Miracle on 34th Street – A young Natalie Wood turns from Santa skeptic to believer when her wish for a house – and a daddy – come true.
3) Love, Actually –Death, cheating, lust, a lobster in the school play about baby Jesus, and the Prime Minister. Funny how British accents make this storyline surprisingly sweet. Fab soundtrack, too. Delightful cast includes Hugh Grant, Keira Knightly, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth and Emma Thomspon.
4) Elf may be a favorite Christmas movie for the kids. But don’t forget about the shower scene with Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell singing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” and the sweeter than cotton candy and syrup ending.
5) The Family Man – Nicholas Cage is so focused on work that he forgets the true meaning of life. The lovely Tea Leone co-stars and eventually brings the mad man to his senses.
6) White Christmas – Singing, dancing, a romantic inn set in Vermont. What’s not to love about this old-fashioned romance starring Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye?
7) Sleepless in Seattle – Tom Hanks plays a recent widower. His young son wants to find a wife for his sad dad. Back in the old days, before eHarmony and Match.com, we had national call-in radio shows to match up lonely souls during the holidays…
8) Last Holiday – Queen Latifah gets bad news from the doctor, cashes out her retirement account and escapes on a dream vacation. Gorgeous scenery and the handsome LL Cool J make this the perfect chick flick.
9) When Harry Met Sally – Admit it. You’ve been Sally or Harry at some point in your life. Just like in real life, it takes several years of lonely holidays and bad relationships before these two college friends finally become a couple.
10) The Family Stone – You knew we couldn’t leave a movie that stars a diamond engagement ring off the list! Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney and Diane Keaton are delightful in this RomCom.
