It has finally happened. You’ve said “Yes” to the person you’ve been anxious to spend your life with. You knew this day would come, your friends have been rooting for it and your parents have been pressing “when.” This is a GIGANTIC milestone in your relationship; don’t sell it short by immediately sharing on social media (although I know you want to). Give it some thought, dissect, and once you’re ready to share with the world, start with the below essential tips. Patience is a virtue – you’ve already waited this long. What are a few minutes, or days more?
Tell your family and best friends – first.
What’s worse than finding out your best friend/daughter got engaged over social media? Um, people who hate puppies. Exactly, who hates puppies? Try to resist from sharing on your social outlets before you tell your closest friends and family. Call/text and allow them to share in the moment with you and your boo. But hey, if the excitement takes over and you absolutely can’t help it – do you.
Tell Your Story
No, you don’t need to get down to the nitty-gritty, but do give the deets (leave out anything that will make grandpapa cringe). Your friends will eventually ask so beat them to the punch. Be sure to include where it happened, how it happened and of course, show them the engagement ring!
Be Creative or Funny
Obviously if this is out of your character, don’t do it. But really though, who doesn’t enjoy a good laugh? The most memorable photos are those that evoke emotion. Use clever hashtags, make funny faces or write a clever caption. If you’re able to make your audience giggle, they are more likely to engage with your photo.
Which brings us to our next topic – HOW TO TAKE THE PERFECT RING SELFIE
Consider Your Lighting
As a practicing photographer, I’m aware that lighting can dramatically affect an image, especially when photographing jewelry. If you’re outdoors, block any direct sunlight as it can blur the detail of the ring. While indoors, avoid using flash – natural light is key.
Use a Scenic Background
We’re suckers for breathtaking views and scenic landscapes. Pair that with an engagement ring and you have a prime example of eye candy. Now if you prefer something a tad sweeter, like your fiancé (for example) stick them in the background to snap the perfect pic!
Focus on the Ring
Try to avoid zooming in if you don’t have an external lens. Center the ring (you may use the grid option on Instagram), and lock in on the ring to make it the focal point. This will create a depth of field that will allow for the closest image to appear sharper.
Use a Filter
When in doubt, use a filter. Play with the different photo settings on your phone. Increase brightness, add more color, eliminate shadows or decrease warmth where needed. Also, if you’re a perfectionist like me, download a face tune app to remove blemishes, red eye or anything unappealing to the eye. I’m fairly certain you wont need to make any modifications to your already perfect photo, but it’s great option to have.
