Selecting the perfect metal for YOUR wedding ring!
I know that your wedding ring probably hasn’t been the focus of much of your time, but with the clock ticking away, I am sure you have been reminded a few times that your band is a pretty important part of the ceremony! For years men had 2 choices to make, white or yellow. Today, however, the collection of rings for him is ever increasing! This list will focus on the precious metals available for men (we’ll tackle the new alternative metals in our next article) so let’s dive in.
I am Platinum Strong
When your spouse describes you, what are some of the words you want them to use? Strong? Brilliant? Maybe even Pure? All of these words and more are also used to describe Platinum. For the guy that loves the symbolism of the wedding band and what it stands for, Platinum is the perfect metal. Platinum is usually at least 95% pure with the additional 5% coming from the same family. For the sentimental guy who wants to pass down this symbol of love, Platinum is eternal. Platinum doesn’t let go of any of its metal when something scratches it. The metal in fact just moves out of the way. This ensures a ring that can be handed down from generation to generation. For that sensitive guy, Platinum is a naturally hypoallergenic metal.
I love the classics
For many men, when they think back to the band their father wore (and never took off) that ring is yellow gold. Gold in its pure form is 24K (karat) and yellow in color. Pure gold is mixed with other metals (alloys) to give it strength. If you want more gold and less alloy, go for a ring that has a higher karat weight like 18K instead of 14K. Gold is a great choice against many skin tones but especially warm tones. Even if you are set on a white metal, give yellow gold a try, you may be surprised. And for that guy that can’t decide, two tone bands (bands that combine two separate types of metal) is a perfect way to get the best of both worlds. For the low maintenance guy, gold is an ideal metal since it does not require rhodium plating like white gold and actually looks great even if you can’t get in to polish your ring.
White Gold and Bold
When you go into most jewelry stores, you will find a large selection of white gold rings. White gold has been popular for many years and there are no signs of it slowing down. To get white gold, the addition of silver, zinc or palladium is added to the naturally occurring yellow gold. For the budget conscious, white gold is the precious white metal that gives you the best bang for your buck. If you’re a guy that wants a bit of bling, or maybe a lot of bling, look no further than white gold. Diamonds look whiter and more brilliant when set in white gold, and for a contrast, check out black diamonds or sapphires set in this white metal to really stand out. White gold does require a bit of maintenance but the process of polishing and rhodium plating a ring is quick and simple. If you aren’t a fan of the patina that platinum gets over time, this is the white metal for you.
Real men wear pink
Rose gold has been making a surge into bridal jewelry lately and even though it took a bit longer, we are starting to see many designers using Rose Gold as a compliment to the white metal rings in their collection. You can find men’s bands with touches of rose gold in almost every collection and from many designers’ entire rings in this beautiful metal. Similar to how we get white gold, adding alloys such as silver or copper to pure gold creates the rose coloring. This metal is right on trend and perfect for the guy that is at the forefront of fashion.
Choosing the perfect metal will come with combining your own personal taste and sense of style as well as knowledge of the metal itself. The best advice I can give to my fellow men? Don’t procrastinate on this one. If the ring needs to be ordered, it can take up to eight weeks to arrive. You can always find a ring that will work under tight time frames but your choices will be limited.
