While summer used to be the wedding season, couples are increasingly choosing to get married in the fall. With cooler weather and gorgeous backdrops (hello, changing leaves!) autumn is an ideal time to tie the knot, especially when it comes to making your big day a hit with your guests.
We don’t often associate weddings with being comfortable events, per say, but focusing on making your nuptials nice and cozy will not only make the vibe even more romantic, but it will keep your loved ones happy too. Here are five ways to do it.
Choose Rich Colors and Textures
Swap a traditional white palette (which can be a bit sterile) for reds, purples or golds, giving your guests a feast for their eyes. Incorporating lots of lush greenery, with wreaths, garlands and trees can also make your event space come alive and feel more intimate, too. When it comes to fabrics, opt for tactile choices like velvet or faux fur and incorporate patterns, like plaid, too. These can be used for throw pillows in a lounge space or even as part of the wedding party’s attire.
Include Festive Touches, Tastefully
It may seem a little on the nose to use pumpkins in October wedding décor, unless your big day is Halloween-themed. But weaving in gourds, for instance, on your cocktail hour buffet display, or as vases, can bring that coziness of the season in without being kitschy. These hallmarks of fall will remind guests of the sprit of fall, making the whole vibe feel more festive and fun.
Offer Blankets for Your Guests
Since the weather can be a little unpredictable in the fall, especially when it comes to wind, consider renting or buying some cozy blankets for guests to use. (This is particularly important if you’re having an outdoor wedding.) Strategically place baskets filled with blankets around the reception, or place one on the back of each chair to invite guests to curl up.
Use Food to Set the Tone
There’s nothing like cuisine to make an event feel cozier. Instead of serving the same old food you’ve eaten at every other wedding, try adding in some fall favorites like roasted acorn squash, sweet potato mash, apple cider and pecan pie to really make your meal stand out. The familiarity of having some fall or even holiday dishes will instantly brighten up your guests’ moods, and get everyone excited about chowing down on some comfort food.
Warm Things Up
There’s nothing like a roaring fire to make your wedding cozy. If your event space allows, create a s’mores station for your guests or simply fill the fireplace with fresh chopped wood that someone can light when the sun goes down. Guests who aren’t into dancing (or need a break from the party!) can recharge with a drink and a blanket in front of the fire. If this isn’t an option, use candlelight to up the romance factor and create a warm vibe. Tea lights can be grouped on tables amid higher candelabras, giving your reception dinner an added wow factor as well.
