Things To Consider When Choosing Diamond Shape And Size

So, you’re thinking of getting engaged… CONGRATULATIONS!  This is an exciting time and possibly one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your life! No pressure, right? Don’t lose sleep over it, we’re here to help! Now that we got that out of the way, let’s move on to the next step – Finding the perfect diamond for your engagement ring.  I’m sure you’ve done tons of research (countless hours, numerous Pinterest boards) but are still not 100% sold on a specific cut. I mean, how do you know what shape will look best on your finger? Well, just like dressing for a specific body type, certain styles look better on selective hand types. Once you are able to match your hand type with the current trends, the search becomes a whole lot easier. Take a look.

Long Fingers

Mostly every style works with long, slender fingers but consider choosing a wider band as it complements the length. Princess-cut and round stones are especially flattering as they draw attention to the center of the ring instead of the length of your fingers.  In this scenario, bigger is better so don’t be afraid of larger, bolder pieces.

Slender Fingers

The trick to selecting a ring for slender fingers is to not overpower them. Try selecting a smaller pear, oval or marquise from the Poem Collection to add length. Smaller stones (.50CT to .75CT) can actually make thin fingers appear wider and thick bands will also widen the look of the finger.

Wide Fingers

For wide fingers, find a style that doesn’t show too much skin on either side of the ring or the fingers may appear bulkier. Although, having wide fingers gives you a substantial variety of rings to choose from that range from funky to classic. When selecting your stone, it’s best to choose a larger rectangular shape like emerald or cushion – narrow stones are not as flattering.

Large Hands

The most popular size for a center diamond is 1 CT. We suggest increasing the appearance of your ring by adding a popular halo around the center. It will add triple the sparkle for a fraction of the cost. The suggested cut for bigger hands are oval, princess-cut and heart-shaped. Also, if you’re feening for more sparkle, consider stacking a few bands on either side to give it that WOW factor.

Small Hands

You’re probably not going to like this but for smaller hands, it is best to keep the overall proportion of your ring small. Round, princess-cut, pear-shaped diamonds tend to work well. If you are considering a round stone, 6 prongs on the ring (crown) will add height to the center diamond maintaining one focal point. We also recommend choosing a thinner band so that if you add a wedding band, it doesn’t overpower your hand or “weigh down” your arm.
