When you embark on a relationship, you may wonder where this journey between you and your partner is headed—particularly if it’s leading toward marriage. Along the way, you’ll have experiences together that may make you take pause and wonder if the person you’re with is indeed “the one.”
The following ten moments are common ones that will tell you just that: Your significant other isn’t just another fling or someone fun to be around – he or she is likely the person you’ll want to spend forever with. Of course, not all of these moments happen to every couple, but when they do, you and your partner will definitely take pause and start thinking about the future.
- Telling your friends all the details about your amazing first date – The first step toward finding your life partner? When you can’t stop gushing over every second of the incredible date your new potential boyfriend or girlfriend took you on. Your friends may get sick of hearing about it but no worries, you’re over the moon and you don’t care who knows it.
- Realizing that there’s a serious connection – This can happen when you discover that you had similar upbringings or are passionate about the same thing—whatever bonds you, you come to understand that your attraction is more than skin deep.
- Talking about the important things – When you realize that you can reveal your deepest secrets, fears and desires, you know you’re with someone who could be your soulmate. A true partnership means sharing yourself emotionally with another person. The first time you feel comfortable with showing your vulnerable side, you’ll likely wonder if your partner could be that someone special.
- Laughing so hard you cried – Truly laughing–snorts, tears, and all–together is another moment that defines your relationship. Laughing connects us on an emotional level and shows us that life with another person will be exciting and joyful, even as the years pass, looks fade and life throws us curveballs. Having someone to laugh with is the key to happiness over the decades to come.
- Disagreeing for the first time – Being able to argue constructively, and still love each other despite your differences, shows you that you can do this for the long haul. Even when you oppose each other on a given issue, you can still come back together and agree that you love each other, no matter what.
- Discovering each other’s weird traits – Maybe you floss your teeth in the shower, or perhaps your partner can’t sleep without wearing socks. Showing each other these quirks peels off another layer of who you are and allows you to expose your true selves.
- Feeling like your partner really gets you – The moment that you feel seen and heard—and still loved—is a big one. The bliss of partnership is being able to be who you are, no matter what, and feeling respected and cherished because of it. When you feel like your significant other truly understands what makes you, you, it’s a special moment that further pushes you down the path toward a long term commitment.
- Saying “I love you” – Of course, those three little words mean everything. Once you say them, you’re in a whole other league.
- Deciding to move in together, if you chose to do so. – Choosing to share your home is a huge step in any relationship. While it’s certainly not a requisite for marriage, moving in reveals so much about you and your partner—there’s no hiding anything from each other now, particularly your everyday habits (for better and for worse).
- Having a marriage talk – Once you two have the big talk, you’ll likely know for sure if taking the next step toward marriage is in your future, or not. This defining moment forces you to examine what life would be like with this person by your side and if that’s something you truly both want. Chances are, if you’re talking about getting hitched, you’re on the road toward a proposal.
