When you think of an engagement ring—any engagement ring—you probably picture a diamond. Or, at least I do. It’s fitting, then, that my own ring is the quintessential round-cut solitaire.
But just because I gravitate toward the conventional doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the recent trend of more non-traditional options.
Because while the tried-and-true diamond ring still reigns, non-traditional rings are becoming increasingly common. Part of this, no doubt, is because of the recession—rather than splurge on a pricey diamond, couples are focusing their funds elsewhere.
However, whether it’s by choice or by circumstance, women are gradually moving away from the conventional—and not just where rings are concerned. Many aspects of couples’ weddings are now becoming highly personalized, so why should the ring be any different? As with your wedding ceremony, your reception, and your dress, your ring should reflect your personality and tastes, not simply look how you think it should.
Some of the more popular styles I’ve seen are women wearing a pave band in lieu of a one-rock stunner, swapping out diamonds for sapphires, pearls, or pink topaz, and even not having gemstones at all.
Sure, some ladies can get flack for their quote-unquote “unusual” rings, but I think wearing what you love is the most important thing when it comes to your marriage bling. After all, you are going to wear it (hopefully) forever.
