Dallas Cowboy Tony Romo sets up surprise marriage proposal for cowboy at Robbins Brothers store opening
Dallas Cowboy Tony Romo sets up surprise marriage proposal for Dallas firefighter at Robbins Brothers

This weekend, as I watched March Madness highlights on ESPN, I saw something about Tony Romo scroll across the bottom of the screen. Was he traded? Then I saw “$100 million over the next six years” followed by news that the Dallas Cowboys extended his contract. He’s staying in Dallas! What a relief for my friends and co-workers who live and breathe Cowboys’ football.

Tony was one of America’s most eligible bachelors back in December 2007 when he visited Robbins Brothers in Dallas for our grand opening. Tracey and I had planned for a decent turnout, but we were admittedly shocked to see a few hundred fans – including many single women – lined up outside around the store waiting for his limo to arrive.

Sure, this star athlete is good looking. But what we loved most about Tony that evening was his genuine excitement and willingness to help us with a surprise marriage proposal. Here was this big-shot pro football player in our store who could have easily said he only had time to sign a few autographs and then head out the door for his next appearance. But he wanted to make this proposal extra special for Robbins Brothers customer Jason Garvey, a Dallas firefighter and actual cowboy.

The news cameras were rolling, many broadcasting live for the 6 pm news. Tony welcomed the crowd and then asked for a volunteer so he could test out asking a woman to marry him. The ladies went crazy and sighed when Tony called on a lovely brunette who was shocked as she walked towards him. But the real surprise came when her boyfriend Jason popped up in the back, told Tony to scoot, then dropped to bended knee and proposed with a gorgeous diamond engagement ring.

Tony stayed at the store and chatted with every customer and employee and spent over an hour taking photos with anyone who asked. He even signed footballs and jerseys for the kids. Just a few of the many reasons why we love Tony Romo.

Congratulations to our favorite Dallas Cowboy. This incredible contract really couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
