I remember being a kid and excited for Christmas to roll around. I would always be ready for all the food, the family time and of course the gifts that I got from Santa.
I never thought once in my youth that I would one day be married and have to figure out how I would share my time with my family. Then there came Scott and somehow I knew early on that he was the one for me. When our first Christmas together as a couple came around, I didn’t worry too much about how the time would be spent because we were early into dating and didn’t think too much on how we would have to split time.
We both made an effort that year to spend time with each other and our families. Scott came to my parents’ annual Christmas Eve Party and I went to his Aunt Bunnie’s house for more food than I could handle. As time progressed we kept with that same routine because it worked well, and then Santa brought me a ring on Christmas Day 2010.
So now, more than ever, it was time for us to figure out how we were going to make it work. Since we got engaged on Christmas Day, we went to both our families homes to announce our engagement and it was EXHAUSTING. Now don’t get me wrong, I did love seeing each side of the family and their reactions but it was a lot that day. Since then we have decided that no one family is more important than the other so we worked out how to divide and conquer during the holiday season. Here are a few tips to try:
1. Christmas Eve is just as important as Christmas Day. Don’t try and cram in everyone in 24 hours… It just does not work. Spread it out over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to ensure all bases are covered.
2. Combine and share the love. Scott’s family circle is a little smaller than mine so we combined ours together last year and it was awesome.
3. Use the time to your advantage. If you have down time in between meals or activities, visit with who you can. This is an easy way to get through the day without missing anyone.
4. Throw a Holiday Party of your own. Since my Parents do an Annual Christmas Eve Party, we have decided to throw a party of our own a couple of days before. This is a great way to see some family and friends before Christmas (especially for those who travel during the holidays).
I wish I could tell you that it is easy and everyone will be able to do what we have done, but I will tell you this: There is nothing wrong with Family Love during the holiday season. Make sure you remember that in the middle of the chaos, and stay true to what you and your Husband want the most.
Happy Holidays to you and yours…. Love The Cameron’s!
