Getting engaged on a holiday is a popular choice—the day already feels special, so why not make it even more so by getting down on one knee? The 4th of July is a great time to pop the question since it’s not the typical holiday when people usually get engaged (cough, Valentine’s Day, cough). Plus, it’s a little bit ironic (in a good way) to decide to join your lives together on Independence Day.
Thinking that July 4th might be the day for you? Here are five ways to make your engagement truly memorable.
Wear navy
Dark blue is a great color on any man, no matter his stature or skin tone. Don a navy suit if you’re going formal or a navy shirt and jeans if you’d prefer to be more casual for your proposal. You’ll look sharp and you’ll show off your patriotic spirit without being too on-theme.
Incorporate local celebrations
If your city is hosting a 4th of July parade or fireworks show, use the event as the backdrop to your proposal to make it extra festive. Better yet, you could work with your town organizers to commandeer a float, or get the local marching band to play your and your fiancé-to-be’s song as part of the question-popping process. Never hurts to ask! Especially since people tend to love to be apart of proposals and romantic celebrations.
Give her red roses
Nothing says “I love you” like a dozen red roses. Classic, romantic and, dare I say, patriotic, red roses are the gold standard for a reason. Sure, they may be a touch cliché, but few women wouldn’t swoon over these blooms.
Get festive with food
For a subtler nod to the holiday, go the holiday-themed food route. Make blueberry and strawberry-topped waffles for a breakfast-in-bed proposal or go with traditional American fare—burgers and fries—at your favorite local joint before or after you pop the question.
Celebrate with sparklers
Watching the fireworks together will surely cap off your engagement with a bang. But lighting your own (safely and legally, of course!) would be even more memorable. (You can buy sparklers online via Amazon or celebration-focused websites.) If you’re inviting family or friends to partake in your engagement, you might consider having the group light sparklers together after your partner says “yes” for an amazing surprise.
