What’s the Difference Between 14k or 18k Gold?
Pure yellow gold is soft and is blended with other metals to strengthen it. A higher gold karat weight has more pure gold and is softer. A lower gold karat weight has less pure gold and is more durable. Many rings are 14k or 18k gold as these karat weights provide a nice mix of beautiful gold and long-lasting strength. (24k gold is pure gold: all 24 parts are gold. 18k gold is 18 of 24 parts gold (75%); 14k gold is 14 of 24 parts gold (58%).)
The higher the karat weight, the softer the gold. If you’re concerned about scratches, for instance, 14k may be the best choice. If your skin is easily irritated by metals, 18k may be a better option.
