Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement was one of the most talked about events of 2017. In fact, Meghan’s stunning three-stone diamond dazzler is a hot engagement ring trend of 2018. The custom ring is not only beautiful, but holds a great deal of sentimental value as well, including two diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal collection.
While we all can’t get our hands on a royal ring, you can still sparkle like Meghan Markle with your own three-stone inspired engagement ring or other heirloom design.
In an interview with the local NBC station, Tommy Shipp, general manager of the Robbins Brothers Houston store, highlights the steps one must follow when designing a ring with a family heirloom.
Why are more and more couples using heirlooms to propose?
There are many different reasons people are using heirloom rings to propose. For some, it may be more cost-effective to use a ring passed down from generations instead of buying a completely new ring. For others, the sentimental and personal value behind a family heirloom makes it more special to propose and wear for years to come. We’ve helped customers propose with an heirloom ring that was passed down from a family member, along with couples who started the tradition and plan to pass their engagement ring to the next generation.
Should you have your heirloom inspected? How does that process work?
Our master jewelers will inspect your ring and diamond to make sure that you know the best route to go with your piece. Because of how diamonds were cut 50-60 years ago, they may not have the sparkle you want as a primary stone in your engagement ring, but could be a beautiful accent or pendant diamond.
What are some tips couples should keep in mind when incorporating an heirloom into a piece of jewelry?
- First, find a jeweler you respect and can trust
- Have the heirloom inspected and fix any problems if possible so the piece doesn’t get worse as time goes on
- Before making any changes, decide on exactly what you want (are you using a current heirloom or creating a new one?)
- If resetting the family heirloom, look at all options (new diamond? new setting?)
- Budget accordingly (knowing the desired result of your heirloom piece, pick a budget you’re most comfortable and stick with it)
