How To Choose A Memorable And Meaningful Gift

‘Tis the season of giving, which means that we’re all in the midst of making lists for our loved ones and wracking our brains over what to get those impossible-to-shop-for friends and family members. Determining what to get everyone can be exciting, but also a bit exhausting—you want to choose something each person can cherish for years to come. Which is no easy task!

To help you take the guesswork out of what to give, try the following tips for choosing a present that’s truly meaningful. Happy shopping!

Make jewelry personal
Bling is always a fabulous present, for any occasion. But to make an even bigger impact, choose jewelry with added significance by picking out something with the gift-getter’s birthstone or his or her children’s birthstones, or by adding a special engraving. These details make the gift more than just something sparkly.

Give an experience
From a romantic dinner to golf lessons to a day of white water rafting, a special excursion can make an unforgettable gift. Especially for people who never seem to want anything in particular or are hard to shop for, giving the gift of making memories together is a great plan.

Focus on the person’s interests
A yoga devotee may appreciate a pretty set of mala beads, while a book lover may relish a gift card to the Kindle store. Gifts that focus on a person’s hobbies and activities show that you pay attention to what makes them tick and allows them to continue enjoying their interests, which will be much appreciated.

Pay attention
Around this time of year—or any time, really—keep your ears and eyes open for clues regarding what people may want. Your mom may lament over her chipped pie plate or your son may share that all the kids at school are really into trading baseball cards at lunchtime. You’d be surprised by how many gift ideas you’d get just as you simply listen and observe your loved ones.

Create a keepsake
Handmade presents always brighten people’s holidays. Whether you frame a special photo, create a scrapbook or make a craft, your loved ones will appreciate the time and effort you put into designing something special just for them.

Don’t procrastinate—or overthink it
The best way to ensure that you’ll find great gifts for everyone on your list is, first, by starting early. (Some people actually holiday shop all year round and just buy and store gifts as they find them!) If you wait too long, you may not find what you’re looking for and you’ll get stressed, which is never a good mindset for shopping. Secondly, try not to put so much pressure on yourself about buying the perfect present—because there’s no such thing! In most cases, good enough really is good enough!
