Pay attention to the little details such as the jewelry she wears now. What color is the metal? White-yellow-pink? Is she bold and flashy or the more simple down- to-earth type? Is she into current fashion trends or has a love for vintage and antique clothing? What does her day usually look like? If she is in the medical field, you may want to look for a ring design that is smooth and has a lower profile. If she has an allergy, go with platinum for a hypo-allergenic option. Take notes and keep these things in mind when selecting the ring setting.
