4 Ways for Singles to Survive the Holidays

I can attest to the fact that for many people there’s a a love/hate relationship with the holiday season. Yeah I know it’s designed to be a festive time of year for all those who celebrate, but it can also be very lonely and depressing for single women and men across the world. Especially when you hear songs like All I Want For Christmas Is You, Let It Snow, and What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve, coupled with various engagement ring commercials that air frequently. It just makes you want to snuggle up and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa and marshmallows with the one you love (just sayin’).

I’ve been single for way too many holidays to count and though I’m kinda sorta dating someone now, here’s what I’ve learned in the past about how singles can survive the holidays in full force, even if you don’t currently have a romantic plus 1 for all those party invites (sigh).

Create Memorable Experiences with Family and Friends
Enjoy a fun movie night with your coed group of friends, host a festive pajama party with the besties or visit a place like Chill, The Ice Kingdom or The Grove in LA. Whatever you do….set aside time to enjoy holiday cheer with the most meaningful people in your life.

Give Love for Christmas
Volunteer! Whether it’s at your church, a local charity such as Olive Crest or perhaps visiting the elderly in convalescent homes, make time to spend time with the less fortunate and you will see just how blessed you truly are. Whether you’re Single or Taken, life is a gift. Celebrate and never take any moment for granted. Tomorrow is not promised.

Perfect Your Cooking Skills
This is the perfect time of year to practice those holiday recipes that have been passed along to you. Your favorite cookies, a special egg nog blend or elegant entrees such as spicy fruit-stuffed pork loin with roasted pears (fancy huh?)….just have fun with it. ‘Tis the season to eat and be merry!

Treat Yourself
The good thing about being single this time of year is that you get to save money and not worry about gifting a picky significant other. 🙂 Seriously. Last year my nieces weren’t the only ones who received fun gifts, I did a lot of shopping for myself too and it was wonderful. Treat yourself to a new flat screen TV or golf gear for the fellas; or a pair of sexy heels or nice piece of jewelry for my single ladies. Be your own Santa and see how good it feels.

So I have a question, whether you’re Single or In A Relationship….what are you personally doing to make the season bright?
