5 Questions to Ask Yourself When Thinking of Proposing to Your Girlfriend

5 questions about proposal

By guest blogger Mark Estrada, Robbins Brothers Marketing Assistant

It may seem a little unfair to know the answer to a question before you ask it, but in the case of a marriage proposal, having confidence that the answer is yes will help with your sanity. Of course you can never be 100% sure, but here’s a way to get to 99% and make it easy on yourself and maybe everyone else you know.

First off, how long have you been dating?
Fortunately there is no established timeframe on how short or long people need to date to get engaged, but since marriage is a lifelong commitment it’s probably a good idea to take your time before diving in. Does she talk about your future together? Does she use the word “forever” when discussing your relationship? Without a definite “it’s marriage time” moment, I suggest giving yourself a full year together before you decide to take a knee. A year gives you the opportunity to understand your partner’s ups and downs, how they react to a bad day at work, how they celebrate holidays, how they solve problems and how best to communicate with them.

How’s the wallet?
Money isn’t everything, but it allows the two of you to have freedom to grow in your relationship without needing help from others. If you haven’t already, discuss your financial history and future together. Talk about your spending and saving habits, any long term goals, joint accounts, saving for a house or kids. This will help minimize uncertainty for both of you so that when she comes home with a curious smile and a $400.00 purse, you won’t be surprised.

Are you her #1 confidant?
Regardless of if she is happy, sad or indifferent, does she want to come to you first to share how she feels? If you are the first person she runs to with anything that is on her mind, you can believe she considers you as her rock. You should be the person she trusts the most and she should be the same for you.

Have you discussed marriage?
Marriage is an eventuality for many, but is still incredibly special and at some point you may have discussed the possibility. What is her opinion of marriage and what is her view of marriage for herself? Will you adopt traditional gender roles or a more modern view? Getting to know her view of marriage will help you understand her expectations for the future.

Do you party more together than with your single friends?
The Vegas club hopping has started to get old and you are noticing a change in the preferred activities the two of you attend. Are you making the transition from lone wolf to igloo dwelling penguins? How does she feel about spending more time with you than her girls? How do you feel about spending most of your free time together? What balance do you strive for? How much freedom do you allow each other? Discussing these questions will help manage the relationship changes among each other and your friends.

Once again there is no way to be 100% sure of her answer, but asking these questions will help you assess the relationship for who you are now, who you hope to become, and what role you’re expected to play. Now that all of that is out in the open I ask you to consider one last thing, do you love her? Does she love you? If the answer is yes, I’d say it’s a good time to snap, crackle, pop the question.

The Perfect Butterfly Themed Marriage Proposal

Congrats to Robbins Brothers customers Daryl and Cristina from Arizona! Just Engaged!

Congrats to Robbins Brothers customers Daryl and Cristina from Arizona! Just Engaged!

Engagement Date  June 15, 2014
Wedding Date  July 4, 2015

How did you two meet? (In Daryl’s words)
In 2010, my friend Melissa (whom I dated when we were 13 years old) invited Cris and me to a 4th of July party. Cris was there on a date with another guy. That date wasn’t going well for him. After she sent him home, Cris and I started talking. One thing led to another, we exchanged numbers and we went on our first date that next weekend. Cris LOVES butterflies and roses, so our first date was to see the live Butterfly Pavilion at the Natural History Museum and the Rose Garden at the California Science Museum across the quad.

How did you propose?
Every year we go to Vegas for Cris’ birthday (June 17). For this trip we had several activities planned, including the Tournament of Kings dinner and show at Excalibur Hotel & Casino on the night we arrived (June 15). When you walk into the casino on the main floor before heading down to the theater, there is a photo concession stand where scantily clad models invite you to stand with them in playful poses. After they went through their routine, I asked if we could do one more pose. I snaked the ring out of my pocket, dropped to my knee and asked Cris to marry me. The model you see in the background of the “on my knee” photo and the photographer had no idea I was going to do this. The model’s candid reaction is obvious excitement and joy and the photographer just kept snapping shots. We were the first people anyone could remember EVER using their service to capture a wedding proposal. After she said yes and I placed the ring on her finger we went down to the theater for dinner and the show where they announced our engagement to the entire arena.

What does she love most about the engagement ring?
As you may have guessed from the description of our first date, it was no accident that the ring I chose for Cris is butterfly-theme. I spent several long weeks searching for a suitable ring before finding this one on the Robbins Brothers website. Once I found it, that was it. I knew it was the perfect ring for her. I was almost shattered when I learned that it was from the 2012 Spring Collection and no longer available in stores. When Lori Harris from the Ring Center explained that I could special order it from a manufacturing plant in China I was overjoyed despite it being Chinese New Year and there would be a bit of a delay. We love that this ring looks like a butterfly. It is a perfect choice for Cris who loves butterflies so much.

Summer of Love Engaged Couples Reunion on KTLA-TV

Robbins Brothers’ Valentine Surprise Proposals have become a viewer favorite on KTLA Channel 5. For nearly 10 years, the Robbins Brothers Love Team and popular fun-loving Los Angeles reporter, Gayle Anderson, have helped anxious guys plan and surprise their girlfriends with heart-wrenching marriage proposals…..on live television! There is always uncertainty, suspense and a little chaos involved; and sometimes the Love Team doesn’t even make it on-air due to breaking news stories. But one thing’s for sure, each and every proposal we plan is special, sweet, tear-jerking, fun, magical and memorable.

Recently we decided to catch up with some of our previously engaged couples to see what they’ve been up to since their televised proposal. But first we started the week off with a surprise proposal for an EMT who stunned his girlfriend during a CPR training in the city of Orange!

Watch the Video!

Once the charming Keith Boles proposed to Michelle in 2012 in front of coworkers, she gleefully started singing and dancing! Stan Huang serenaded the love of his life, Janelle, for breakfast at Old Vine Cafe and she is not a morning person (uh oh). Did these couples actually get married or was it all for show?

A few years ago Ray Ledesma popped the question to Rochelle at her daughter’s daycare with the help of adorable kids (awww). Did they make it to the alter and if so how’s married life we wonder?

Meanwhile, Refugio Calderon was all set to propose to his girlfriend Juana at the Alan Levy Dental Office, but there was a gunman pacing a rooftop in Westwood and the segment was almost cancelled (yikes, never a dull moment on live TV!). Did love conquer all?

All  smiles, Juana Calderon shows off her Robbins Brothers engagement and wedding ring set to reporter Gayle Anderson.

4 Sweet Marriage Proposals On Fourth of July!

I’m getting ramped up for the Independence Day festivities and I just can’t wait to check out the bright fireworks shows!

july4proposalblogimg

We’re also getting excited for the holiday by checking out any cute marriage proposals on Fourth of July. Here are four of our favorites:

This super romantic proposal has it all: Romance, the shock value, adorable pictures, the sweetest song and beautiful fireworks! Just try not to tear up to this romantic song.

The simplicity of this video is what I love about this marriage proposal. The romantic silhouette of him on bended knee and the bright, popping fireworks is pretty romantic in its simple way. And when she leans in for a kiss to signify “yes” is just too cute. Then the fade out with the end of the fireworks. I just love this proposal!

This guy decided to propose to his girlfriend by shouting it over the rooftops on Fourth of July! Great concept and adorable execution, but I have to suggest other people not to do this! Imagine if she fainted… lost her footing? Or if she jumped up and down? When you’re being asked to marry the love of your life, we suggest you stay away from high ledges and slippery slopes! Cute proposal, though!

Finally, I had to include a proposal video that involved the good old American tradition: baseball!! A man decides to propose to his girlfriend on the field, which is where they had their second date, a year prior on 4th of July!
